24 Jun 2010 Stake Temple Night

The Stake Temple Night:
Of course this session of stake conference was great. We definitely would not have missed this. Last stake conference we had about 300 members present and President Suhaka wanted more to come this time. I don’t know how many were there, but there was standing room only in the back of the chapel. The talks were wonderful at the chapel session.
But the most wonderful experience for me was having the endowments completed for 18 of my ancestors. I took 14 cards for female ancestors and Merlin took 14 cards for male. Merlin was able to turn in only four cards, but Joyce Brown and I were able to give out all of my cards. We were just lucky. I think there is a rule about only submitting 3 cards during a stake session. Probably because they feel that everyone will be bringing cards to submit, so they have to limit the number one person can offer so everyone will have opportunity.
Anyway, I was truly inspired and encouraged by the wonderful talks at stake conference and most especially at our temple session. Being able to have 18 of my ancestor’s endowments completed during our stake temple session was better than chocolate.

Helping in new.familysearch

I had a great day yesterday. I was able to work with a ward member to correct some errors in her new.familysearch. We worked together for four hours and got a lot accomplished. She is very helpful in providing extra information. We still have more to do because there are so many errors in her new.familysearch information. I love her and appreciate working with her. I'm so glad she is anxious to make sure everyone is taken care of.
I've had the privilege of working with several ward members on their new.familysearch and it is encouraging and motivating to witness the love people have for their extended families in both directions. With all of the "world" about us, working with my own and other's family history gives me a feeling of peace and confidence for our future.

Temple Work

It's amazing! From the time I had my cards printed, it seemed so many things got in the way of completing the work. But our daughter in law Jenny, took the cards and set us up with a time to do the baptisms. Then Merlin had to work and Scott, our son, had to work. Others who were invited weren't able to make it as well. So it was Jenny and I.

I arrived at Jenny's house and she drove us to the Salt Lake Temple. She just knows everything. We went to the baptistry and Jenny prepared to be baptised for 15 women. I thought that the work for the men wouldn't be done because we didn't have a man with us, but there were plenty of workers there willing to help. And a added surprise was that a friend of Jenny's was there performing baptisms. So her friend baptised Jenny for all of the women and a newly called missionary was baptised for the men. This young man is a relative of Hyrum Smith and is called to the Independence Missouri Mission. Merlin's mother is from the Hyrum Smith line.

After the baptisms and confirmations Jenny suggested that we do some initiatory. We got dressed and walked over to that area. We completed all but four of the women's names before we had to leave for home. We had a time constraint for us to be finished and on our way home.

The spirituality of the sessions was apparent and marked by clear impressions given to each of us during the baptisms and initiatories. Jenny has her stories to tell. These are mine. I was quite impressed during the baptisms that many of these men and women were waiting for this to be done for them. When certain names were read, I felt so impressed that this was important to them individually. During the initiatories, one name really stood out to me, Klara Kristina. When I read her name, the spirit told me she was ready for this work to be accomplished for her. I told the worker of my feelings and she felt the spirit as well. These are wonderful sister workers who provide this service for us.

So this is my report. We have much more to do, but we are on our way. Some of this work had to be accomplished before my grandmother's little babies could be sealed to her. I'm eager to do those sealings. I am also eager to hear of your stories.

Stake Women's Temple Night Wed 12 May 2010

This sounds so wonderful. The last stake temple night we went to, where the Stake President and others spoke, was so enlightening. I'm going to really try to attend this special women's temple session on Wednesday, 12 May 2010. I received this announcement via email from the stake website. It would be fun to take some of our own names through the session! I'm going to look for someone in my family to take through.

Welcome!

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Now you come write something!

Now I’m going to figure out how to invite everyone in our ward to contribute to this blog. I think it will be so fun. Come, visit, and share!
You will neet to obtain a gmail account which isn't hard.  You can do it.  This is fun.

Welcome to the Union Fort 3rd Ward Family History Blog!

Merlin and I thought it would be so fun to have a ward family history blog. We can submit stories, questions and links that might be helpful to others. We can share success stories.

I’ll start with a story about teaching the Family History Class in Sunday School this year.
When I began working on my families' genealogy, I didn't understand about sources. I never completed a research paper in high school or college. I hated trying to reduce the subject of my research down to one theme. This lazy attitude continued to be displayed in my genealogy research attempts. As I looked for my ancestors, I found several websites with downloadable files of my Ware and Radley ancestors. I was very happy with the already compiled family history data from distant family members. Why reinvent the wheel I thought. Who would say they were related to someone who was not their relative?

Sidney Wells, who is an actual true blue genealogist, signed me up for an eleven week genealogy research class. It was there I found out how important sources are.

So, now I'm teaching this Family History Sunday School class. There are seven lessons. And I'm trying to teach them the importance of sources. Many of the class are people whose ancestors have been members for generations. Others are like me, converts with a beautifully blank canvas on which they will paint their family histories. I used several true stories about sourcing throughout the class. One in particular is about my Aunti Do's brown paper bag. She cut open one of those large brown paper bags she got from the grocery store and wrote on the blank inside all of the genealogy she remembered about our family. I now have a copy of that brown paper bag.

Because of the brown paper bag, I found a death certificate. Information on the death certificate led me to some relatives not on Auntie Do's brown paper bag, and sources. So I am beginning to learn about sourcing. I used these examples to teach sourcing to my class. In the last class, I took them  from Auntie Do's brown paper bag to actual sources like the death certificate, and pages from the Federal Census to taking people to the temple by using real sources.

Then I mentioned to the class some GEDCOMs I previously downloaded for my Ware and Radley families. I said that they were sourced very well, so I wasn't going to go over them now, I'd wait til I found some of the folks who no one had found. My class stared at me with horror! There was an audible gasp from some. Then several of them said that I couldn't trust the sources listed in the GEDCOM! They were incredulous that I would accept these GEDCOMs. This was the most attention to my lessons I had ever had in these classes. All eyes were on me! I was ecstatic! They got it! They really got it! I finally mentioned that the sources were enumerated very well with name, place and actual text. So I felt that I could wait on these folks to prove the sources. Reluctantly they acquiesced.

I'm so happy that they got it. The FH Center has a saying. "Family History without sources is Mythology!" Sidney says that she has created a monster because now I'm crazy for sources.
